What Is an Edge Beam?

An edge beam is the thickened section of concrete running around a slab’s perimeter, deeper and more heavily reinforced than the general slab area. On a raft slab in particular, the edge beam is a defining structural feature — it’s what gives the slab most of its overall stiffness and load-carrying capacity around the building line.

The Structural Role Edge Beams Play

Edge beams function similarly to a continuous, shallow footing running around the building’s perimeter, resisting the loads transferred down from external walls and providing the rigidity that helps the slab act as one cohesive structural unit rather than a simple flat sheet of concrete. Without adequately sized edge beams, a slab would be considerably weaker at exactly the points carrying some of its most significant loads.

How Edge Beams Are Sized
