Estimating A Waffle Slab For A Melbourne Home

A waffle slab is one of the most common footing systems for new houses across Melbourne, particularly on sites with reactive clay or variable soil. It combines a ribbed concrete grid with polystyrene void formers, which reduces the concrete volume needed compared with a solid slab while still spreading the building load evenly. This calculator gives you a fast, standard-rate estimate for a typical residential waffle slab so you can budget before engaging an engineer or builder.

The base calculation is straightforward: your project area in square metres is multiplied by a standard supply-and-install rate of $114.30 per square metre (ex GST), which covers reinforcement, concrete supply, labour, the slab concrete pump, one day of site cut and one day of base preparation. Choosing the 410 mm thickness option instead of the standard 385 mm adds a flat $2,000 to account for the additional concrete and reinforcement a deeper slab requires.

Adding Bored Piers

Many waffle slabs also need bored piers where deeper footings are required to reach suitable bearing ground, especially on sloping or reactive sites. If you select "Yes" for bored piers, the calculator asks for a quantity and an average depth, then works out the extra concrete using the volume of a cylinder for each pier (π × radius² × depth for a standard 450 mm diameter pier) at a supply rate of $200 per cubic metre. Excavation for the piers is priced at a flat $2,000 for up to 50 piers, or per-pier rates beyond that, with a flat $400 pouring charge and $1,000 for the pump.

You only need three pieces of information: your slab area in square metres (taken from your house footprint), your preferred slab thickness (385 mm or 410 mm), and whether bored piers are needed. If they are, you will also enter the pier quantity and average depth — figures usually confirmed by a soil report or your building designer.

The calculator returns a line-by-line breakdown: the standard slab cost, any bored pier costs, a subtotal, GST at 10 per cent, and a total inclusive of GST.
