What's the difference between a house slab and a standard concrete slab?

A house slab is a genuinely different proposition to a standard concrete slab, even though both are technically “concrete slabs.” A house slab is engineered to support a full residential structure over its entire lifetime — meaning it requires a soil report, a structural engineer’s certified design, a building permit, and specific reinforcement calculated for your home’s actual loads.

A standard slab — for a shed, patio, or garden path — generally carries far lighter, non-structural loads and doesn’t need the same level of engineering rigour, though it should still be properly prepared and reinforced for its own purpose.

In short: if a structure is going to be built on top of it and lived in, it’s a house slab, and it needs the full engineering and compliance process that comes with that.
