What Is a Concrete Sleeper Retaining Wall?

A concrete sleeper retaining wall is built from horizontal precast concrete sleepers slotted between vertical steel or concrete posts, forming a solid retaining structure that holds back soil on a sloping or level-changed site. It’s functionally similar in concept to a timber sleeper wall, but using durable, rot-proof concrete sleepers instead of timber.

How They Are Built

Construction starts with posts installed at regular intervals along the wall line — either bored piers or screw piles, depending on the site and engineering requirements — set to a depth and spacing calculated for the height and load of the wall. Precast concrete sleepers are then slotted horizontally between the posts, stacking up to the required wall height, with the posts providing the structural strength that resists the soil pressure behind the wall.

Posts and Footings

The posts are the real engineering backbone of a concrete sleeper wall — spaced, sized and founded according to the retained height and any surcharge load (like a driveway or structure sitting behind the wall). Deeper, more closely spaced posts are needed for taller walls or walls under load, which is why post spec is one of the first things an engineer calculates when a concrete sleeper wall is being designed, rather than treated as a standard, one-size-fits-all detail.

Why Drainage Is Critical

Every retaining wall needs to manage the water that naturally moves through the soil behind it — without proper drainage, hydrostatic pressure builds up behind the wall and significantly increases the load it has to resist, well beyond what the soil alone would apply. Correctly built concrete sleeper walls include drainage behind the sleepers (typically a gravel drainage zone with an agricultural drain collecting and directing water away) specifically to relieve this pressure and protect the wall’s long-term performance.

Advantages Over Other Systems

Compared to timber sleepers, concrete doesn’t rot, isn’t vulnerable to termites, and holds its structural integrity for decades with minimal maintenance — a genuine long-term advantage, particularly in ground-contact applications where timber inevitably degrades over time regardless of treatment. Concrete sleeper walls are also available in a range of finishes and colours, so the durability doesn’t have to come at the expense of appearance.

When Engineering Is Needed
