What Efflorescence Is
Efflorescence is the white, chalky or crystalline deposit that sometimes appears on concrete surfaces — caused by soluble salts within the concrete being carried to the surface by moisture, then left behind as the water evaporates.
What Causes It
Efflorescence needs moisture moving through the concrete to occur, so it’s more commonly seen where concrete is exposed to ground moisture, poor drainage, or during periods of high humidity, particularly on newer concrete still undergoing its longer-term curing and moisture-equilibration process.
Is It a Structural Concern?
