What Is a Waffle Slab?

A waffle slab is a ribbed concrete footing system built over a grid of expanded polystyrene pods. Once the pods are laid out on prepared, compacted ground, a network of reinforced concrete ribs is formed between them and a thin structural topping is poured over the whole grid. Viewed from underneath before the topping goes on, the pattern of ribs and voids looks like a waffle iron grid, which is where the name comes from.

The ribs do the structural work, carrying the loads of the home down into the ground, while the polystyrene pods reduce the volume of concrete needed and provide a small amount of thermal insulation under the finished floor. Because the rib grid can flex slightly as a unit without cracking the slab itself, waffle slabs are specifically engineered to perform well on sites where the soil is expected to move seasonally.

What Is a Raft Slab?

A raft slab, sometimes called a conventional slab, is a single uniform slab of reinforced concrete poured as one continuous unit, usually thickened at the edges to form an integral edge beam around the perimeter and under any internal load-bearing walls. There is no pod grid and no rib pattern — the whole slab acts as one solid raft that “floats” on the prepared ground beneath it.

Raft slabs are generally simpler to form and pour than waffle slabs, since the formwork is limited to the perimeter and internal beam lines rather than a full pod grid. They rely on more consistent, less reactive ground conditions to perform well, because the slab itself has less built-in flexibility than a waffle system.

Key Differences Between Waffle and Raft Slabs

On paper the two systems solve the same problem — supporting a home on the ground beneath it — but they get there differently:

  • Soil movement tolerance: waffle slabs are designed to accommodate more ground movement; raft slabs suit more stable sites.

Which Soil Types Suit Each Slab Type

On a stable, low-reactivity site, that extra cost buys you very little benefit, which is exactly why raft slabs remain the more economical choice where the soil allows it.

On a reactive clay site, though, the comparison changes. A raft slab built without enough allowance for ground movement is a false economy — the ongoing cost of cracking, remedial underpinning or door and window realignment down the track can dwarf the difference in the original slab price. In practice, the “right” slab for a reactive site is whichever one your engineer certifies as adequate for that soil class, and that’s rarely a straight raft slab once you’re into H1 territory and beyond.
