The Concrete Pouring Process Explained Step by Step
For most homeowners, pour day is the most visible, exciting stage of a concrete project. Here’s exactly what happens, from the truck’s arrival to the finished, curing slab.
Before the Truck Arrives
By pour day, formwork, reinforcement and any plumbing or electrical rough-in should already be complete and inspected. The crew does a final check of levels, formwork bracing and reinforcement placement (including correct cover — reinforcement needs to sit at the right height within the slab, not touching the ground), and confirms site access for the concrete truck and, if needed, a pump.
Delivery and Placement
Ready-mixed concrete arrives by agitator truck, mixed and ready to place. For sites with good direct access, concrete may be placed straight from the truck’s chute; for sites with restricted access or larger pours, a concrete pump extends reach, allowing placement exactly where needed without the truck itself needing to access every part of the site. Placement typically proceeds in a planned sequence to keep the pour moving efficiently and avoid the concrete beginning to set before adjacent areas are placed.
Spreading and Levelling
As concrete is placed, the crew spreads and works it into place using rakes and shovels, then screeds it — dragging a straight edge across the formwork’s top level to bring the concrete to the correct height and remove excess. This stage also involves consolidating the concrete around reinforcement and into corners, helping avoid voids or honeycombing (gaps where concrete hasn’t properly filled around reinforcement or formwork edges).
Finishing the Surface
Once screeded, the surface is finished according to the specified treatment — a standard trowelled finish, an exposed aggregate treatment, or another decorative finish. Timing here matters significantly: finishing too early (before the concrete has set enough) or too late (after it’s set too much to work) both cause problems, which is why experienced finishing crews closely monitor the concrete’s condition rather than working to a fixed schedule regardless of how the pour is actually progressing.
Cutting Control Joints
Control joints — deliberately weakened lines that give the slab a predictable place to crack as it naturally shrinks during curing — are either formed during the pour or saw-cut into the surface once the concrete has hardened enough to cut cleanly without ravelling (typically within the first day or so). Correct joint spacing and depth is part of the slab’s overall design, not an afterthought.
Curing Begins
Once finishing and jointing are complete, curing begins — the concrete needs to be protected from rapid moisture loss over the following days and weeks as it gains strength.
