What Concrete Pumping Does

A concrete pump takes ready-mixed concrete from the delivery truck and pumps it through a pipeline or articulated boom directly to the pour location — allowing placement in areas the truck itself simply can’t reach, whether due to distance, obstacles, or restricted access. It’s a genuinely enabling piece of equipment for sites that would otherwise be extremely difficult or impossible to pour conventionally.

Line Pumps vs Boom Pumps

Line pumps push concrete through flexible hose sections that can be manually positioned and extended to reach the pour area — well suited to smaller jobs or sites with tight access where a boom pump’s larger footprint isn’t practical. Boom pumps use a mechanical articulated arm to place concrete with precision over a wider reach, well suited to larger pours or sites where the boom’s reach and placement accuracy add real efficiency.

When Pumping Is Needed

Pumping is commonly needed for sites with restricted truck access (narrow side access, sites behind existing structures), sloped or difficult terrain, larger pours where efficient, continuous placement matters, and situations where minimising truck movement across a site (protecting existing landscaping, driveways or structures) is a priority.

How a Pump Day Works

On pump day, the pump is positioned and set up before the concrete truck arrives, with concrete transferred from the truck’s mixing drum into the pump’s hopper and then pumped continuously to the pour location as the crew places and finishes it. This coordination between truck delivery and pump operation is planned in advance to keep the pour moving efficiently without delays.

Cost Considerations

Pumping adds cost to a project — equipment hire, setup and operation — but for sites where direct truck placement genuinely isn’t practical, it’s not really an optional extra so much as a necessary part of making the pour possible at all.
