Why Concrete Needs Joints

Concrete naturally shrinks slightly as it cures, and also expands and contracts with temperature changes over its lifetime. Joints give this inevitable movement a predictable, controlled place to happen — keeping the surface tidy and preventing the random, unsightly cracking that would otherwise occur across the slab wherever internal stress happens to be greatest.

Control Joints vs Expansion Joints

Control joints (sometimes called contraction joints) are cut or formed into the concrete at regular intervals, creating a deliberately weakened line where shrinkage cracking is directed to occur. Expansion joints are typically a full-depth gap, often filled with a compressible material, allowing for thermal expansion and separating a slab from adjoining structures (like a driveway meeting a garage slab) so they can move independently without cracking each other.

How Joint Spacing Is Determined

Joint spacing is calculated based on slab thickness, concrete mix design, and the specific application — as a general engineering principle, thicker slabs and certain mix designs can support wider joint spacing, but this isn’t a figure to guess at. Correct spacing genuinely matters: too wide, and uncontrolled cracking can occur between joints; unnecessarily tight spacing adds cost and cutting without additional benefit.

When Joints Are Installed

Some joints are formed during the pour itself (using joint formers placed in the wet concrete), while others are saw-cut into the surface once the concrete has hardened enough to cut cleanly — typically within the first day or so after pouring, timed to happen before uncontrolled shrinkage cracking has a chance to occur elsewhere on the slab.
